Bike Sizing

The size of bike that you need will be determined primarily by your height. Bike frames are measured by seat tube length. That is they are measured from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the seat tube. The seat post fits into the seat tube an offers incremental adjustment. The rest of the geometry of the bike is scaled accordingly based on the seat tube length. So as the seat tube gets bigger the rest of the bike gets bigger as well.

Mountain bikes and comfort bikes are measured in inches, usually between 13” and 21” in two inch increments. Some manufacturers reduce the increments to small, medium, and large. Generaly Small is 15” medium is 17” and large is 19”. Different manufacturers will use different incremental sizing, for instance 13.5” 15.5” etc.

Road, hybrid, and cyclo-cross bikes are sized in cm’s, usually between 49 to 61. Again different manufacturers use different increments.
